Dit is wellicht een bijna onmogelijke zoektocht, maar we gaan het proberen. Een Amerikaans-Joodse zeeman, Gary Katz, kwam op 1 oktober 1957 naar Rotterdam met de USS Massey DD778 en bleef in de stad tot 11 oktober 1957. Tijdens Yom Kippoer ging hij naar de synagoge een ontmoette daar een Joods gezin, een vader, moeder en een dochter van rond de twintig jaar oud. Gary werd bij hen thuis uitgenodigd en verbleef er twee nachten.
Een andere bijzonderheid was dat de actrice Jane Mansfield de bemanning van het schip bezocht op 11 oktober, vlak voor ze Rotterdam verlieten. Gary was erbij en staat op een van de foto’s. Het meisje van twintig moet nu over de tachtig zijn en Gary wil haar (telefonisch) ontmoeten. De familie is in de 63 jaar niet uit zijn gedachten geweest.

It is an almost impossible quest, but we are going to give it a try. An American-Jewish sailor, Gary Katz, came on October 1st, 1957, to Rotterdam on the USS Massey DD778 and stayed in Rotterdam until October 11th, 1957. During Yom Kippoer he went to the synagogue and met a Jewish couple with a daughter of about 20 years of age. Gary was invited at their home and stayed there for two nights.
Another special event was that the actrice Jane Mansfield visited the crew of the vessel on October 11, just before they left Rotterdam. Gary was there and is on one of the pictures. The girl of 20 years of age should be older than 80 now, but Gary wants to get in touch. In the past 63 years the family did not leave his thoughts.
